Mechanics of Carbon Nanotubes - Fundamentals, Modeling and Safety

Mechanics of Carbon Nanotubes: Fundamentals, Modelling and Safety draws on the latest industry practice and academic research to provide the ideal guide to the mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes. The fundamentals of nanomechanics and mechanical behavior of carbon nanotubes are presented, along with explanations of more advanced themes, including the classification of carbon nanotubes into twenty classes, nanomechanics of graphene sheets, basic models for deformation of carbon nanotubes, analysis of size effects, sliding in multi-wall carbon nanotubes, generation of phonons, multiphysics modeling, nanocomposites, interfaces, and the safety of carbon nanotubes. This is essential reading for anyone involved in research or engineering involving carbon nanotubes.
  • Provides a system for the classification of carbon nanotubes, aiding correct selection for various applications
  • Includes the Matrix Registry Analysis for nanoscale interfaces that is essential for design involving friction or sliding
  • Includes parametric maps to help readers pick the right model for a particular CNT geometry (beam vs. shell vs. thin or thick shells, etc.)
  • Presents a thorough examination of the safety issues related to CNTs, including toxicity at high aspect ratio

Vasyl Harik obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Delaware. He is Principal Scientist at Nanodesigns Consulting, a spinoff from NASA Langley Research Center. He is the editor and co-editor of three books, and author of a short course on mechanics of carbon nanotubes with ASME. He is the co- investigator of the URETI Institute for bio-inspired nanostructured materials, a research consultant for the National Institute for Aerospace, and a Consultant for NASA NAIC Institute, and University Space Research Association (USRA) on nanotechnology research projects.
