Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Dam Safety Management and Engineering - ICDSME 2023, 16-17 March, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

This book presents peer-reviewed articles from the 2nd International Conference on Dam Safety Management and Engineering (ICDSME 2023), organized by the Malaysian National Committee on Large Dams (MYCOLD), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). With the theme 'resilient dams for resilient communities,' the conference highlights dam safety and engineering issues by together dam professionals and experts around the world to discuss, reflect and share their experiences in addressing these issues.

Prof. Ir. Dr. Lariyah Mohd Sidek is a professor at the Civil Engineering Department and Head of the Sustainable Technology and Environment Group (STEG) and Strategic Planning, at the Institute of Energy Infrastructure (IEI), UNITEN. She received her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan; M.Sc. in Hydrology Engineering from University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK; and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from University of Pittsburgh, USA. She has been actively involved in numerous research projects and consultancy services in the area of hydrotechnical, dam safety, hydrodynamic modeling, dam break analysis, reservoir sedimentation and flood forecasting. Currently, she is a president of Malaysian National Committee on Large Dams (MYCOLD), executive member of the Malaysian Hydrological Society (MHS) and executive member of Water Resources Technical Division, Institution of Engineers Malaysia.

Dr. Gasim Hayder is a senior lecturer at the Civil Engineering Department, College of Engineering, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), where he has been a faculty member since 2013. He teaches, conducts research and provides short courses and consultancy services to industry, especially in the field of water and wastewater treatment, assessment and monitoring. He also served as the head of Unit at the Institute of Energy Infrastructure (IEI); head of Water and Environmental Engineering Unit at the Department of Civil Engineering; and senior researcher for Sustainable Engineering Group UNITEN. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia; M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia; and B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Omdurman Islamic University, Sudan. He is also a MIET chartered engineer (CEng) from the Engineering Council (UK). He has extensive practical engineering, teaching and management experience.

Dr. Ali Najah Ahmed received a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering from the University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq, in 2003 and an M.Eng. and Ph.D. in civil engineering from the National University of Malaysia(UKM) in 2009 and 2012, respectively. During the period between 2012 and 2015, he worked as a faculty member as a senior lecturer in the school of Ocean Engineering, University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Malaysia. Dr. Ali currently working as a senior lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, National Energy University (Universiti Tenaga Nasional-UNITEN) in Malaysia since 2015. His research interests include the application of machine learning in water resources management. In addition to that, he carried out different studies related to dam optimization using meta-heuristic techniques. He also has been involved in research related to the application of machine learning in the field of air quality, solar radiation and waste management.

Prof Dr Ignacio Escuder-Bueno is with the Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering, Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain. He has more than 25 years of experience in dam governance and dam safety around the world, having participated in the development of several dam safety recommendation guides in different countries.

Ir. Dr. Hidayah Basri is a senior lecturer at the Institute of Energy Infrastructure and Civil Engineering Department at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). Her background is in water engineering, focusing on reservoir inflow forecasting. She is actively involved in various international and national research grant in dam safety and flood evaluation. As a professional engineer, she is also involved with engineering consultancy work with private and government agencies. She holds a position as the secretary of the Malaysian National Committee on Large Dams (MYCOLD). At the international level, she is the member of Young Professional Forum (YPF) of International Commission of Large Dams (ICOLD) and representative of YPF at the ICOLD Technical Committee for Public Awareness and Education.
