This book comprehensively covers both basic and clinical aspects of the shoulder, from its anatomy and biomechanics, to the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of shoulder disorders.
Designed as a practical and richly illustrated reference guide, it provides the reader with the essentials needed to evaluate and treat shoulder injuries, including radiologic assessments, rehabilitative techniques and surgical procedures (both open and arthroscopic). It includes extensive coverage of the anatomy and pathology, while clinical topics covered include fractures around the shoulder joint, sport injuries and arthroplasty.
Written by an international team of experts, who share tips, pearls and pitfalls, as well as best practices from their own experience, the book will be of interest to orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, rehabilitation specialists and biomechanists alike.


Prof. Marcheggiani Muccioli graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna and achieved specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute - University of Bologna, both with honors. He was one of the founders and the first president of the AISOT (Italian Orthopedic and Trauma Residents Association). He obtained a PhD in Surgical Sciences regarding knee surgery and a Master in Biomechanics, pathology and treatment of upper limb pathology awarded by the University of Bologna. He improved his training performing a 4 month ESSKA Fellowship in Shoulder Arthroscopy in 2014 at the Wrightington Hospital - Wigan, UK, under the direction of Professor Lennard 'Len' Funk. In 2015 he was the first SIGASCOT-JOSKAS Travelling Fellow in Japan, visiting sports medicine medical centers in Sapporo, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima and Yokohama. Prof. Marcheggiani Muccioli works as Senior Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon in the field of Sports Traumatology and Joint Surgery (reconstructive and prosthetic) of knee and shoulder. He carries out his assistance activity at the II Clinic of Orthopedics and Traumatology - Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli - Bologna, Italy. Starting from 2018 he has been a Researcher at the University of Bologna Medical School. In 2021 he was nominated Associate Professor at he same university in several degree programs (Medicine Orthopaedic technicians, Sports science, Orthopaedic and Traumatology). His research activity (H-index 28) carried out at the University of Bologna focuses mainly on the pathology of the knee and shoulder, in the fields of sports traumatology and prosthetic surgery. He wrote one book and numerous book chapters; he took part as speaker in more than 100 international meetings and more than 100 Italian national meetings. He is an active member as part of the Knee Committee of the SIAGASCOT (Italian Society of Arthroscopy, Knee surgery, Upper Limb, Cartilage surgery and Orthopaedic Technologies). He collaborates with national and international working groups; he is referee of numerous international journals; he is Associate Editor of The Knee and member of the Editorial Board of KSSTA (Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy). He was nominated as 2022 Insall Travelling Fellow.
Prof. Gazi Huri earned his degree in medicine and surgery at the  Ankara University School of Medicine. He got his orthopaedic training at the Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Ankara, Turkey. He continued his education with a clinical research fellowship at John Hopkins University, Baltimore USA and with observerships at hospitals in Austria and Switzerland.
Prof. Huri currently practices at the Hacettepe University School of Medicine which is one of the oldest and leading universities in Turkey. The hospitals orthopaedic department provides services to both Hacettepe Adult Hospital and Hacettepe Ihsan Dogramaci Children's Hospital. Prof. Huri authored multiple publications and presented in many orthopaedic events; he is an active volunteer in several local community organizations.  Dr. Huri is a member of several medical and orthopaedic societies, including leadership positions in Federation of Orthopaedics Trainees in Europe (former president); Turkish Young Orthopaedics and Traumatology Surgeon Council (founder president), which is an official  branch of Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Association; European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (National Delegate, Turkey Representative); European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT, ex-Board Co-opt member), and active member of Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons (ABJS). As a 2018 AAOS International Scholar, Prof. Dr. Huri attended AAOS/OTA Orthopaedic Trauma Update in Tactics and Techniques surgical skills course in the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, IL and had an observership program at the Stanford University Medical Center.
Dr. Alberto Grassi Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon working in the field of Sports Traumatology and Joint Surgery (reconstructive and prosthetic) of knee and foot & ankle. He carries out his assistance activity at the II Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute - Bologna. He completed his MD at the University of Bologna, Italy, and his residency in Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute of Bologna, Italy. He obtained a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bologna and obtained the National Qulification for the role of Associate Professor in Orthopaedics. He has been a Fellow of Dr Annunziato 'Ned' Amendola at Duke University, North Carolina, USA, in 2016, and winner of the European Arthroscopy Fellowship in 2018, visiting European centres of arthroscopic surgery in Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Member of ESSKA Arthroscopy Committee and Member of the Editorial Board of KSSTA, Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics (JEO), Video Journal of Sports Medicine (VJSM) and Biomed Research International. Awared with the Systematic Review Award by AJSM-AOSSM in 2020 and the by ISAKOS for best articles in Arthroscopy and Degenerative Conditions category. Since 2009 he is focused on in clinical and research setting, which allowed him do publish over 170 papers in peer-reviewed and indexed journals, over 30 books chapters, surgical videos and abstract for International congresses. His major research interests are meniscal allograft and scaffold replacement, biomechanics of knee ligament reconstructions, treatment of osteoarthritis and evidence based medicine and meta-analysis on sports trauma conditions.
Prof. Zaffagnini graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna and achieved specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute - University of Bologna, both with honors. He improved his training performing a six months Fellowship in Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Research in 1993 at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, under the direction of Professor F. Fu and Professor S. Woo and in 1997 he was an ESSKA AOSSM travelling Fellow in the USA, visiting sports medicine medical centers in New York, London (Ontario), Richmond, Memphis, Atlanta, Cincinnati and San Francisco. Prof. Zaffagnini is head of II Clinic of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli - Bologna, Italy, since 2017, where he practices daily. Furthermore, he is a visiting surgeon at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital Doha, Qatar. Starting from 2016 he has been a Full Professor at the University of Bologna Medical School in several degree programs (Medicine, Nursing, Orthopaedic technicians, Sports science, Orthopaedic and Traumatology). Prof. Zaffagnini continues the goal of scientific innovation, in fact he has published more than 300 articles in national and international journals; he wrote numerous books and book chapters; he took part as speaker in more than 300 international meetings and more than 200 Italian national meetings, covering important positions (chairman of the arthoscopy committee of E.S.S.K.A. from 2008 to 2010; Scientific Chairman of the 14th, 15th & 16th E.S.S.K.A. Congress; member of the 'Anterior Cruciate Ligament Study Group'; chairman of the 10th I.S.A.K.O.S Congress; co-chairman of the 11th I.S.A.K.O.S Congress, chairman of ISAKOS program in 2019; president of SIGASCOT society from September 2014 to September 2016; chairman of The Meniscus 2019, editor in chief of the JEO since 2019). He is a member of the Editorial Board and reviewer for the main international journals of orthopaedics and sports medicine (e.g., American Journal of Sports Medicine, KSSTA Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy). Prof. Zaffagnini was named World Ambassador for the city of Bologna in 2019 and Top Senior Scientist at the Rizzoli Institute in 2017, 2018, 2019 due to his commitment to clinical and scientific activities.
